Pre-Surgical Psychological Evaluations

A Healthier You

Diagnosis of a chronic medical illness results in physical, as well as psychological discomfort.  Surgery may be recommended as the preferred treatment for several chronic medical illnesses.  Surgical outcomes are significantly influenced by the relationship between a patient’s physical and psychological well-being.   Given the intensive nature of major surgery combined with the impact of a patient’s emotional and cognitive functioning on post-surgical recovery and adjustment, it is important to assess a patient’s psychological health prior to and following surgery.  As a result, a comprehensive psychological evaluation is essential for purposes of identifying possible barriers, as well as personal strengths, which facilitate development of specific recommendations to improve patient’s post-surgical well-being.

Pre-Surgical Psychological Evaluation entails the administration of objective and standardized psychological tests developed for the medical population to assist patients and family members in preparing mentally and physically for surgery.
